FEAR ENTOMBED

Paper Mache Mask
6″ x 10″
1995
Collection of the Artist

My intention in creating this mask was to learn the process of paper mache by using my face for the practice mold but when it came to sculpting the mask I felt like a marionette whose strings were being controlled by some other dark and threatening force. With every layering of paper I felt a resurgence of anger and rivulets of revulsion as I recalled my childhood loss of innocence and trust. I believed creating this mask helped me to express what I had long repressed enabling me to start my journey towards healing and self love.
